Test-optional does not mean test-irrelevant. The right decision depends on the student, the college, the academic program, and the rest of the application.
Begin with each college’s current policy. Then compare the student’s score with recently reported ranges while considering grades, course rigor, school context, and intended major. A score can strengthen an application when it confirms academic readiness or adds useful context.
Do not submit automatically just because a score exists, and do not withhold automatically because it falls below a midpoint. Consider whether the score supports the application’s overall academic story.
Testing policies change. Verify current requirements directly with each college before applying, and build a timeline that leaves room for thoughtful preparation without crowding out coursework, activities, and application writing.
